The web loves good, brandable & memorable domain names. Having a generic domain name – one that is keyword rich and specific to your niche area – relevant to your personal or business enterprise, either as the primary site or satellite site, gives your site added kudos and may be the differentiating factor that brings you business over your competitors. Added value to search engines is vital in today’s google-orientated internet. The domain name is one factor that search engine algorithms use in calculating the domain pagerank. A keyword-rich domain name, if used well, can give a natural positioning advantage that you don’t need to pay per click for.
The Anyname portfolio is comprised of a range of domains spanning a wide range of categories and genres acquired for their generic brandability and potential. More details on the Anyname Domain Portfolio can be found here.
Domain Leasing
Domain leasing is a new service in the Anyname range for 2009. Whether it’s testing the water for a new generic brand, generating additional back links to your existing website through a satellite site, or simply as an alternative domain purchase, then domain leasing may be suitable for you.
So how does domain leasing work? The following FAQ’s should answer this. If you have any further questions please contact us.
Who Owns The Domain?
The domain remains the property of Anyname DS during and after the lease period is completed – unless a sale clause is included and acted on. You lease the domain name for a fixed period, paying a monthly rental fee. We retain ownership throughout but you have full use of the domain name.
How long is the lease?
Minimum lease terms are 6 months, though it is recommended that domains are leased over a longer period of 1-3 years. Search engine optimisation can take anywhere from 3-9 months or longer to show any real rewards.
Is there a lease contract?
Yes. This is an important part of the process and protects both parties. A lease agreement is signed by both parties prior to commencement. A copy of the lease agreement can be provided to seriously interested parties.
So how does it work in practice?
We retain ownership of the domain – registrant name & IPSTAG. The nameservers are repointed to those of your hosting company. We do not provide hosting, but can provide recommendations if required.
Can the lease be terminated early?
In principle yes, though penalties may apply. Termination may be by the lessor or lessee. The notice period is 6 months during which rental payment is required.
What can we do with the domain?
Again in principle, whatever you want – general usage is agreed beforehand. The lessee is responsible for the upkeep and usage of the domain. There are caveats – no sites involving pornographic, rascist, illegal, copyrighted or anti-trademark material, etc. The lessee must also understand and abide by the terms and conditions of Nominet. These will be provided by the lessor and are an important part of the lease. The domain can NOT be sublet, nor can the lease contract be transferred to a 3rd party.
What happens after the lease period ends?
There are a number of possibilities which are covered in the contract and are negotiable.
- You stop using the domain name and we repoint the domain to our servers. We retain control of it and are free to use it as we wish, including sale or re-lease – this includes search engine rankings but excludes current content.
- You re-lease the domain name for a further fixed term, at a re-negotiated price. In order to protect your interests, the amount of any increase can be capped in the lease agreement.
- If a sale option is included in the lease then the option to purchase at a set price is offered.
