I’ve Voted – Have You…?

Nominet’s annual AGM this July is a bit more of an interesting event than in normal years. The political in-fighting, government intrusion, and general malaise at the heart of the Nominet membership-board relationship has brough to a head certain issues that the ongoing governance review and AGM vote will go some way to address… or not. Time will tell

Of course I’m not telling who I voted for… though others have it’s something I never do, for any election I participate in.

In saying that I have delayed the followup article I had planned for my ‘open letter to Nominet’ which I’ll publish sometime after the vote when the new board structure is in place. After attending one of the governance meetings and trawling through both reports there’s a few things to mention.

One thing that I will raise here is my concern over the Nominet board’s ‘recommended candidates’ for those ‘seeking further guidance’ and the use of Nominet admin staff to promote these. I’m not a corporate lawyer, so I don’t know the legal stance on this, and whether it is common practice for boards to use this method for the promotion of candidates voted for by membership. Considering the trust issues that the board is attempting to resolve I can’t see how this crossing the line of impartiality can help things. Maybe it’s standard procedures, I don’t know. It just feels wrong.
