Revolution Two – Premium Themes
I posted late last year on the move from the Revolution premium themes by Brian Gardner to an open-source release of new CMS-ready RevolutionTwo themes: link.
At the time I thought it was a brave – if strange – move, more in line with a romantic ideal that with any business plan.
Development is a resource & time-intensive process. Releasing to open-source is a laudable objective, but not at the cost of the core business. It’s a balance which has to be met. In the modern internet world release of open-source material has to balanced with returns in other areas – whether this is increased brand recognition, such as with Google, secondary resource revenue such as WordPress hosted solutions, support & training revenue such as with fedora linux, or more commonly donations and bespoke development work as in the case with the majority of open-source releases.
‘There’s no such thing as a free-lunch’. It’s a well-known saying, that is more than suitable with development on the internet. Reverting back to a premium theme resource was probably a difficult choice – whether in hindsight or scheduled, but one that I ultimately support and applaud.
Revolution themes are still some of the best on the market, and equally so still some of the best pound-for-pound themes available.
I’ll still be supporting them – and using them in my scheduled site developments and migrations. Probably more so now.
Purchase of the theme packages is the best option, and gives access to all themes, support and future releases.
