Domain Phishing Scam. Look after your domains.
The phishers & scammers have realised that domains are pretty valuable commodities these days, and as the word is out that banks don’t send emails asking for your personal information they have expanded their repetoire to domains and trying to get access to accounts to transfer them. Particular targets are .coms at registrars eNom & Network Solutions
A number of bogus emails from what appears to come from several Domain Registrars have been received in email inboxes. The emails state that a domain name has expired, or has been sold, and advises the recipient to log into their Domain name account and update their information.
The most highly prized possession of anyone involved in the Internet is their domain names, and if a person follows the links in the emails, they run the risk of losing their domains.
Network Solutions has advised of the existence of the emails, and recommends domain owners not follow any link found in the bogus emails.
Enom.com has posted a warning on their web site:
“Phishing Alert:
We recently became aware of the below fraudulent email circulating to customers requesting that customers log into their accounts to correct inaccurate WHOIS information.
Here is an image of the e-mail.
That email is not legitimate, and we believe it is an attempt to compromise your accounts and/or domain names.
If you have received the email above and you attempted to log into your accounts using the links in the email, login to your account and immediately go to My Info to update your password and your secret question/answer. If you believe that your account has been compromised, please contact us.”
It’s recommended that you check the status of any domains held at these & other .com based registrars, and if you’ve been duped by the scam to contact your registrar immediately.
Simple solution. Never click links in any email unless it’s one you can verify as authentic – i.e. expected, from a verified source, and does not require you to provide any personal details.
