AVG Release v8 Free

AVG Technologies v8

AVG Technologies – formerly grisoft.com recently released v8 of their award-winning anti-virus & internet security software suite. It’s a powerful and cost-effective version to the other market big boys Norton and Symantec.

Also now released is the free -for private use – version, also now updated to version 8, to replace the soon to be unsupported version 7.5.

Configuring is easy, and updating can be done on booting up the machine, at a set time, or manually.

Among the new features of the anti-virus software – the part that is free – is the web protection browser plugin which intuitively tells the user if a web-link is among a database of known phishing or malware sites by placing a symbol at the end of the link in a traffic light format – green tick for ok, red cross for a bad site, and amber warning sign for a site with potential issues.

It’s a neat solution and in a search engine results page, like google, gives the user an easily seen peace of mind about a page link before it is clicked. It’s also a lot less intrusive than the the phishing toolbars that are employed by the other competing packages, which also reduce available screen size.

AVG browser plugin

I’ve been using AVG since version 5 and it’s served me well for over 5years. I’m currently running both the free and full licensed versions – on seperate machines! and am impressed by the additional featured of the licenced version, not to say the free version isn’t impressive, which it most certainly is.

The full internet security suite includes a souped-up Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Spam, Web Protection & Firewall. It provides comprehensive protection for Windows against all online threats giving confidence in your home or small office. Licencing is available for 1-2years. There is also a business version.

The free version can be found here, and the full internet security suite or for upgrading from free to licenced version through the main AVG page here.
